DJI launching their own 360 camera

As someone who’s been deep in the 360° camera space for years, I nearly spilled my coffee when Mic sent me this screenshot from twitter

DJI, our favorite drone maker, appears to be finally jumping into the 360° camera arena – and honestly, it’s about time.

After some digging around on twitter I found the link to the FCC Filing Details: https://fccid.io/2ANDR-OQ0012024

The documentation under registration key 2ANDR (DJI’s Osmo division) for what they’re calling the OQ-001, or as the test docs say, a “panoramic camera.”

Look, we all know what that means – DJI is coming for Insta360 and GoPro’s lunch.

What We Know So Far:

  • Product name: OQ-001 (Model: 2ANDR-OQ0012024)
  • Has the usual Bluetooth and WiFi (no surprises there)
  • They’re calling it a “panoramic camera”

Here’s why I’m genuinely excited: DJI’s stabilization tech in their drones and gimbals is ridiculously good. Imagine that level of stabilization expertise applied to 360° footage.

This filing didn’t show up alone – it’s part of a whole wave of DJI FCC registrations, including the Mavic 4 (!) and the RS 4 Mini Gimbal.

What’s fascinating is how this might be DJI playing 4D chess with potential regulatory challenges to their U.S. market access. More about this in a later post ….

Release Timeline ??

While I’d love to see this drop in Q4 2024. These filings are likely DJI’s way of securing their regulatory position rather than hinting at an imminent release.

Personal Take: Having tried pretty much every 360° camera on the market, I’m genuinely curious to see what DJI brings to the table. The 360° camera space has been a three-horse race for too long, and DJI’s engineering prowess could shake things up in the best possible way.

[I’ll be updating this as more details emerge]
