Which Ricoh 360 camera has better HDR – Theta X or Z1?

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is essential for high contrast scenes… interiors with bright windows, sunsets, and deep shade.

We’re going to take a look at two Ricoh one shot cameras, the Theta X in HDR-DNG mode and the Theta Z1 in Bracket Mode

Jpeg from both cameras appeared flat and muddy. But the DNG had a greater range of colour and tone.

Post-processing comparisons revealed more differences:

Dynamic Range Handling:
The X presented challenges when attempting to balance the luminosity range between shadows and highlights. Selective masking would be beneficial for optimal results.

Tonal Adjustments:
The Z1 demonstrated superior flexibility in highlight, shadow, and midtone adjustments compared to the X.

Noise and Sharpness:
The X exhibited higher noise levels but marginally improved sharpness due to its higher resolution sensor.

Ai Denoising Effectiveness:
Surprisingly, Ai Denoising in Lightroom proved significantly more effective on the Z1’s DNG files compared to the X. This discrepancy appears to be linked to sensor type differences and Lightroom’s Ai noise reduction algorithms.

Conclusion

In well-lit conditions, the X produces satisfactory results, provided viewers are not looking at high magnification. The X’s smaller sensor introduces more noise, which is partially mitigated by its increased resolution.
For those willing to invest additional post-processing effort, the Z1 emerges as the superior option in the dual-lens, single-shot camera category.
However, it’s worth noting that a DSLR or mirrorless setup would yield even better results. For photographers with established workflows, a traditional rig with stitching might prove more efficient, assuming your processes are well-optimized.
