DJI Neo Review 2024

DJI Neo
DJI launched the DJI Neo, a self-flying “selfie drone” at just $199 — one of the cheapest drones DJI has ever released.

But is it any good?

While we have not really gotten a chance to review the drone – YET

Mic did write a pretty great article about possible DJI Neo compatible Goggles here :

I came across a great review by Youtuber DC Rainmaker

I went through the video and jotted down some interesting titbits for you

TLDR Summary:

The DJI Neo drone shows a lot of promise in follow-me capabilities, especially in complex environments and for running scenarios. It had good durability and highly improved subject reacquisition. However, it still has limitations in high-speed tracking and direction tracking modes. While it performs well in certain areas, it may not outperform specialized drones like the Hover X1 in all aspects. Further long-term testing and comparisons are planned by DC Rainmaker.

Testing Environments:

  • Tree tunnel: Dense wooded area for obstacle navigation
  • Mixed complexity area: Combination of open spaces and obstacles
  • Open areas: For high-speed tracking tests
  • Trail running: Deep woods for advanced obstacle tracking

Cycling Tests:

  • Medium follow mode tested at various speeds
  • Speed limitation observed around 20-21 km/h in normal mode
  • Sport mode tested, reaching up to 28 km/h before losing track
  • Direction track mode found less effective for cycling

Running Tests:

  • Performed in wooded areas with tight turns and obstacles
  • Drone showed impressive cornering and obstacle avoidance
  • Direction track mode struggled with running speeds
  • Worked well for walking/hiking speeds

Durability:

  • Drone crashed multiple times (15-20 in a single day)
  • Continued functioning despite visible damage marks
  • Compared to Hover X1’s durability (150+ crashes over 250-300 flights)

Key Observations:

  • No obstacle avoidance sensors, relies solely on camera
  • Improved subject reacquisition compared to previous DJI models
  • Limitations in high-speed tracking, especially for cycling
  • Good performance in complex environments during running tests
  • Durable design withstanding multiple crashes
