DJI RS 3 Pro and RS 3 — what’s the difference?

DJI launched the RS 3 and RS 3 Pro gimbals. The RS 3 is a replacement for the RSC 2, while the RS 3 Pro replaces the RS 2 Pro. The biggest differences between them are capacity: the RS 3 can support up to 6.6 lbs (3 kg) while the RS 3 Pro can support up to 10 lbs (4.5 kg). The RS 3 Pro also has longer arms to accommodate larger cameras and longer lenses that can’t be balanced on the RS 3.

Improvements and Drawbacks

Here are the major improvements over the RS 2 and RSC 2.  First, improved convenience. Both RS 3 and RS 3 Pro can automatically lock and unlock the gimbal for transport. They both also feature larger 1.8 inch OLED touch screens and a new physical switch for different shooting modes, such as Pan Follow or Pan Tilt Follow.

Second, improved stabilization performance.  The RS 3 and RS 3 Pro use an improved stabilization algorithm that produces smoother footage than their predecessors.

Third, larger capacity.  The RS 3 Pro’s extension arm is an inch longer than the RS2 so the gimbals can accommodate larger cameras and larger lenses.

Fourth, LiDAR.  The RS 3 Pro can use an optional LiDAR rangefinder for more accurate focusing and for focusing on manual lenses, similar to that of the Ronin 4D, up to a range of 14 meters.  However, the LiDAR will drain the battery significantly:  the RS 3 Pro’s battery is rated for 12 hours.  With the LiDAR, the capacity will be reduced to just 3 hours.

Although there are some improvements, there are also some disadvantages for the RS 3.  The RS 3’s handle is smaller and has a smaller battery capacity compared to the RSC 2.  In addition, the RS 3 loses the folding mechanism of the RSC 2.
