I use it all the time on show shoots, it’s just a rather compact fan but no overheating anymore.

Paul, you’re saying your One R overheats after just 5-6 minutes??? What is the ambient temperature and what kind of SD card are you using?

OUTSIDE AT NIGHT IN THAILAND (30C HUMIDTY) TESTS
Alumium Alloy Case by Srium + heatsinks
12 minutes
Battery removed. Cable connected to Anker 26800mA Powerbank 5V3A
1+ hours (I didn’t record more than 1 hour)
Battery removed. Cable connected to Powerbank 5V2.1
1+ hours (I didn’t record more than 1 hour)
50maH 5V1A Powerbank
Insta360 won’t start
WARNING:
• USE A POWERBANK AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you want to use a powerbank, Use thermal tape to tape the core in place or else it will fall out if you are moving around a bit. I WOULDN’T RECOMMEND FOR EXTREME SPORTS!!! I suggest to get a small piece of aluminium to push it up so it locks in place in the case with good quality thermal tape. I’m only walking while filming where I run a cable into the bottom side which pushes it up into place a little. I rattle it around a little over my bed and it seems to hold it ok.
• All tests with the battery froze after the times above. Footage was corrupted.
• All tests with the powerbanks came up with an overheating issue which save the footage apart from the last 2 tests that were fine for over an hour.
• I believe using a powerbank with lower Amp (2.1A instead of 3A) would stop it from heating up as fast
• On the back of the Core, don’t cover the little holes, one is the mic, the other is the speaker
• I noticed the Heatsinks were getting in the way when I was filming so I removed them in the end.

1) Turn Off the LCD Display while Recording
Set it to Turn off After 1 min
(Just use the led light to know that its rec, So it use less power)

2) i used usb cable Battery loading to get Long recordings, but it should work with normal Battery too.

3) DONT use Bluetooth (your mobil) it uses More Power and getting hotter

4) i Removed the case so it get cooled by More Air (dont Remove the case Outside it could Fall apart, i found on Amazon a good case for 50€ for outside (Brand Higatful)

5) i didnt try this one but Read somewhere that you can use a Handheld Fan with usb loading (if you got one) to cool down the Camera while Recording (but it will Producer Noise in the Recording)

dont forget this camera is Build as a Action Camera so they should used normaly in Action situations that produce Wind and cool down the Camera.

6) I tryed my test with a SanDisk Extreme 128 GB V30 u3 A2 & 512 gb Extremen Pro v30 A2
Recorded straight 90 min and more without Problems
(dont forget it cuts the Video every 29 Minuten with 5-10 Seconds Pause between every Clip)

7) This was a inside Test in my room so i Turner Off stabilization in my App. Dont know if its better for the Power/Heat ?! But i dont Need this for my uses.

My Settings:
6K 25 FPS, LOG Mode, Low Sharpnes (for lowlight)

Hope it helps

The heatsink mod, if I could replicate it, would solve the main issue for me which is my need for multiple hour recording (setting in in the middle of an orchestra before starting and only touching it after the concert ends) but the 2 sec gap between 30 minute segments in a dealbreaker for me, cuz one of the use cases is having a continuous uncut video of the conductor which is required for auditions. For this purpose I use a Hero5 and it does okayish but I was looking to replace it cuz not only the final image is a bit lacking in quality cuz lighting isn’t great, recently it just not recorded a whole 70 minutes of a concert and now I have to compensate my client.
The twin 4k would be awesome if it did that uninterrupted long video which the bonus of being able to get other angles of the orchestra in addition to the conductor angle (a hipotesis I confirmed in another article from this site, thank you for that too) maybe it would still be good for this second purpose (working solo and emulating a multiple ppl camera crew), but it wouldn’t replace the hero5.
If anyone has a suggestion of how I could approach this kind of recording I’d appreciate any input, I’m really unsure which would be the best camera for this considering I’m using them for a different purpose than they were actually designed, and many have this overheating issue.
Sorry for this long self centered comment ‘-‘ I may just be thinking out loud too.
Anyway, thanks for all the content you publish it’s being very informative to me.

late to the party I guess, but why do you focus cooling on the lens? Isn’t the core with all its chips the part that heats up?

Seems logical to me. Door open would give needed Air flow.
